THOMAS BAINES NATURE RESERVE

With its main function being environmental education, this reserve boasts an environmental education centre and hostel facilities for organised educational groups. The education centre accommodates up to forty pupils.

The 1 005ha reserve is situated about 15km south of Grahamstown. Valley bushveld interspersed with large areas of grassland and fynbos is typical of this area. The Palmiet River meanders through the hilly terrain of the reserve, ensuring that there is sufficient water for the approximately 42 mammal species such as buffalo, eland, white rhinoceros, black wildebeest, impala, bontebok, and mountain reedbuck. No less than 171 kinds of bird are found here, and for keen "reptile-lovers", there are 24 species on the checklist waiting to be spotted. After a rewarding game-viewing excursion, visitors can relax at the recreation area at Settlers Dam where they will find picnic and braai facilities.

As hostel facilities only cater for organised educational groups, visitors will find accommodation in Grahamstown in the form of hotels or a camping site. The reserve is open throughout the year. Opening time: 07h00 to 17h00.

How to get there:
From Grahamstown follow the N2 westwards for 15km and turn left onto the R343 towards Salem. After 2km turn left again to the reserve entrance. The gravel roads in the reserve are suitable for all vehicles (not buses).
